Spirals, Vol. 1: Not a Straight Line to Be Found

The Mountain

Everybodyʼs feeling out there on a limb

Running from the devil at the will of the wind

Stranded in a jungle, lives are on the line

Overwhelmed by everything

And just not enough time

But you canʼt look at the mountain

When youʼre reaching for the sky

You canʼt look at the mountain

Itʼs always up too high

Casts a mighty shadow

Lets no light into your eyes

When all youʼve got is faith to fly

Donʼt look at the mountain

Or you wonʼt make the climb

Far too many frantic stretched out way too thin

Tryin’ to stay above the water

It’s always sink or swim

Feelin’ too much pressure

No one wants to drown

But it does no good to worry

On the way to higher ground

So you don’t look at the mountain

When youʼre reaching for the sky

The only way to do it

Is one day at a time

It casts a mighty shadow

Lets no light into your eyes

When all youʼve got is faith to fly

Donʼt look at the mountain

When youʼre reaching for the sky

If you think too long

You can talk yourself out of anything

If you think too long

You can talk yourself out of anything

If you think too long

You can talk yourself out of anything

So you donʼt look at the mountain

When you're reaching for the sky

It casts a mighty shadow

Lets no light into your eyes

The only way to do it

One day at at time

No donʼt look at the mountain

When youʼre reaching for the sky

Shelter Island

Lock the door behind you when you go

Out on your way to face the world alone

I’ll have another coffee, pick up my guitar

Write a little song to say I love you

All night long we held each other close

To hide ourselves away from all the noise

Problems that we’re facing are the ordinary kind

Somehow they all work out in time

But oh don’t it make you wonder

How can anyone make it alone

Cause oh when you hear the thunder

It’s good to have a safe place

And someone you can hold

A shelter island

My shelter island

Safety in the storm

Snuggled up and warm

Shelter Island

These days there’s a smile inside my heart

Cause anywhere I go is where you are

A simple way of living is a pleasure to me now

Tonight you know where I’ll be lying down

And oh don’t it make you wonder

How can anyone make it alone

Cause oh when you hear the thunder

It’s good to have a safe place

And someone you can hold

A shelter island

My shelter island

Safety in the storm

Snuggled up and warm

Shelter Island

Tucked underneath the sheets

We’ve got everything we need

Shelter Island

Back in the Neighborhood

Had a dream last night

I was back in the neighborhood

Hanging with the boys in the band on the street

We were talking about moving to Hollywood

Livin’ from hand to mouth

Thought we had it all figured out

With nothing but a heart filled up on dreams

But I know now what I didn't know then

I know now what I didn't know then

There's this hipster café

In the place where the butcher was

It's like the Champs Elysese

Back in my old neighborhood

All my neighbors are gone

Cashed out and moved away

Can't afford it anyway no more

They got those same sidewalk cracks

Same place that they used to be

But most everything else

Just ancient history

And though so much has changed

Nothing more than a memory remains

Just a memory remains

You can't go home again

When you go you're gone forever

Though you swear you'll never let it get that far oh no

You can't go home again

Keep reaching for something better

And remember home is always in your heart

It's always in your heart

I got this place in my brain

I go to every now and then

Where I turn back the time

To this secret place inside my mind

And I know it ain't true

Cause those glory days are a long time gone

It’s all a long time gone

You can't go home again

When you go you're gone forever

Though you swear you'll never let it get that far oh no

You can't go home again

Keep reaching for something better

And remember home is always in your heart

It's always in your heart

No matter where you go it’s not that far

And I know now what I didn't know then

Yea I know now what I didn't know then

I know now what I didn't know then

You can't go back home again

Had a dream last night

I was back in the neighborhood

Back in the neighborhood

In the Garden of November

On a Friday in the garden of November

Sitting on a bench just thinking

About the future and the past

With memories and dreams colliding in mid air

The summer’s over and gone

Winter’s coming on

And all that remains is falling to the ground

On a Friday in the garden of November

Life is passing by, life’s passing by

There’s a church up on the corner where I go

The concrete statues watch while you pray

There’s beam of light streaming through the stained glass window

So you listen close for what God has to say

Hustle’s in the air

Hope outweighs the fear

There’s a chill that tells us

Christmas is getting closer

On a Friday in the garden of November

Looking at pictures of the babies on my phone

You can almost hear the angels choir just singing

With the spirits that surround us come and gone

Summer’s over and gone

Winters coming on

All that remains is falling to the ground

On a Friday in the garden of November

Time’s moving on, time’s moving on

See You When I Get There

I dreamt of you last night

There you were as real as you could be

Same as it ever was

Hanging out together you and me

And there in the midnight something stirred

I woke up, you got lost

Tried falling back to sleep again

But that sweet dream was gone

Gone off to Heaven

I’m here on my own

In dreams I still see you

Shining on still shining on

See you when I get there yea, yea

See you when I get there

And I wonder who’s with you

Grandma Madge, grandpa Lou

Sweet momma Mary Gaines

And the gentleman, I call Andrew

Inky man he’s driving faster than anybody can

Built the most angelic engine

It’s never been known to man

Gone off to heaven

We’re here for just so long

In dreams we will see them

Shining on still shining on

See you when I get there yea, yea

See you when I get there

See you when I get there yea

See you when I get there

Too many names to mention

So many who’ve gone on before

We carry them all with us

A night light down the hall

Only God knows who he’s calling

When or where it’s gonna be

Just keep doing your best at living

Until it’s time to leave

Gone off to heaven

We’re here for just so long

In dreams you will be there

Shining on, still shining on

See you when I get there yea, yea

See you when I get there

See you when I get there yea

See you when I get there
